JOB DESCRIPTION:

Historic Macon, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Macon-Bibb County, Georgia, seeks a Director of Preservation Services. This position is for someone who wants to be part of the renaissance happening in the 200-year-old city of Macon, recently named a Great American Main Street award winner, and help to spread the economic and social benefits of preservation to communities throughout Middle Georgia.

The ideal candidate is familiar with historic construction methods and terminology, able to apply the Secretary of Interior Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties in the field, and competent to communicate with agency representatives and clients in a professional and proactive manner.

This employee is responsible for working with homeowners and developers to complete the necessary research and documentation for state and federal rehabilitation tax credit programs. Additionally, the Director of Preservation Services must be competent to prepare nominations for the National Register of Historic Places.

The position requires someone who can set expectations at the outset of a project and meet deadlines. The successful employee will be well-organized and thorough, an efficient researcher and a confident writer.

This position reports to the Executive Director. Periodic travel within Middle Georgia during the workday is required. Because this position involves generating fee-for-service revenue for the organization, the employee is expected to refrain from freelance consulting of the same nature. All Historic Macon employees are expected to spend 5-10% of working hours on internal coordination, strategic planning and fundraising.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Contract, manage, and complete the application process for state and federal tax incentives for about 30 properties per year: 65% of job;

  • Prepare one or more National Register nominations or updates per year: 15% of job;

  • Review maintenance needs and scopes of work for properties owned by Historic Macon, subject to preservation easements, or financed with help from the organization: 10% of job;

  • Undertake archival research, prepare summary reports and otherwise support selections for annual awards and Fading Five endangered sites list: 5% of job;

  • Contribute to fundraising events, board meetings and strategic planning: 5% of job.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in historic preservation, architecture or related field;

  • Meets Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards (36 CFR Part 61);

  • Experience in preparing historic tax credit applications and/or nominations for the National Register of Historic Places;

  • Advanced computer literacy and architectural vocabulary;

  • Experience working with design professionals, contractors and developers;

  • Demonstrated ability for public speaking (e.g., giving tours, classes conference presentations)
